Kendo is a budo (martial art) that aims to forge the mind and body of practitioners and facilitate the development of character
through continued keiko (practice). Discipline is achieved through the application of the principles of the katana (sword).

“The purpose of practicing kendo is:
To mold the mind and body,
To cultivate a vigorous spirit,
And through correct and rigid training,
To strive for improvement in the art of kendo,
To hold in esteem human courtesy and honour,
To associate with others with sincerity,
And to forever pursue the cultivation of oneself.
This will make one be able:
To love his/her country and society,
To contribute to the development of culture,
And to promote peace and prosperity among all peoples.”
– All Japan Kendo Federation

Kendo is practiced by people of all ages and genders. Our dojo is non-profit, and we do not charge for instruction. Other than registering for the regional and national federations, the only cost is paid directly to the community centers where we practice.

Everyone is welcome to practice with our dojo as long as they are a member of the AUSKF or a partner federation. New members are expected to join the AUSKF/SWKIF to cover liability.

Practicing kendo helps with both physical fitness and mental toughness.

About our practices

The forms of the Japanese katana. We practice 19 total kata in kendo. These kata reinforce our waza, teach correct form and distance, and are done with a strong spirit.

Kendo begins and ends with etiquette. Kendo is impossible without respect for others, our dojo, our equipment, and ourselves.
Every practice contains basics exercises. Basics are the foundation of everything we do throughout our practice and are critical to improving.

Kendo training is not possible without both students and teachers. Kendo in our dojo strives to pull up the students to new heights, while the teachers are pushed up by the students.
